Books, Pages & Play Buttons

Choosing Between Paperbacks, e-Books & Audiobooks?

Raise your hand if you’ve ever had the sudden urge to start reading more books, only to be confused about how to read — paperback? Kindle? Or should you finally give in and try an audiobook?

If you’re nodding your head (and maybe sipping coffee), you’re not alone. I’ve always been someone who loved flipping through actual pages of a book (there’s something so comforting about that papery smell, right?), but with life getting busier, I found myself exploring other reading formats too. So, if you’re torn between the charm of a paperback, the convenience of an eBook, or the hands-free magic of audiobooks, let’s break it down — in true casual, reader-to-reader style.

Paperback

Paperbacks will be classic forever. There’s just something romantic about holding books in your hands. The soft crack of the spine, the way pages flutter in the breeze, and yes — the unmistakable scent of paper (book lovers, you know what I mean!).

Why we love them:

  • No screen fatigue!
  • You can annotate, dog-ear, highlight — guilt-free.
  • Books look gorgeous on shelves (yes, aesthetic goals).

But let’s be honest — paperbacks are not the most travel-friendly. They take up space, get creased in handbags, and you can’t read them in the dark unless you become a flashlight ninja.

Still, for those quiet Sunday afternoons, nothing beats curling up with a physical book. It’s reading in its most classic form.

eBooks

My Kindle has become a permanent fixture in my bag. Why? Because it’s light, stores thousands of books, and lets me switch genres depending on my mood.

Why eBooks work:

  • Extremely portable (goodbye bulky bag).
  • Adjustable font size (hello, late-night reading without glasses).
  • Instant downloads — no waiting for deliveries!

For readers who are always on the go or love reading at night without disturbing anyone else (hi, insomniacs!), eBooks are a total win. And if you’re trying to cut down on clutter, they help you enjoy new reads without taking up physical space.

Bonus: Many classics are available for free online in eBook format — budget-friendly and chic!

Audiobooks

Now let’s talk about this trend in the book world right now — audiobooks. At first, I was skeptical. Would it even feel like reading? And after giving it a try, I could not see myself listening to another audiobook. It just isn’t for me. But hey, that doesn’t mean that you might not love it.

Why audiobooks are a game-changer:

  • Great for multitasking — listen while cooking, cleaning, walking, or commuting.
  • Dramatic narrations make characters come alive.
  • Ideal for those who struggle with screen time or eye strain.

Apps like Audible, Storytel, and even Spotify now offer a wide range of audiobooks — from romance to non-fiction. And yes, you can still say “I read that book” even if you listened to it.

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to reading. Some days you crave the weight of a paperback. Other days, you want your whole library in your palm. And sometimes, you just want someone to read to you while you sip coffee on the balcony.

The beauty is — now we have options.

So go ahead, mix and match. Carry your Kindle, stack up those dreamy paperbacks, and hit play on that audiobook during your next walk. Because reading isn’t about the format — it’s about the feeling.

And if you’re just getting started on your reading journey or trying to return to it after a break, pick the format that feels easiest and most exciting. Your next favourite story is just a page (or play button) away.
