Decoding Colour Pairing – Part I

We’ve all had those “Does these colour even match?” moments while staring at our wardrobe. (I still do sometimes. Standing in front of a full closet and sighing dramatically should be a morning ritual at this point.)

But honestly, colour coordination doesn’t need to feel like rocket science. It’s not just about rules — it’s about playing with shades, expressing your mood, and (most importantly) feeling confident in what you wear. So, whether you’re stepping out for brunch, a meeting, or just a coffee run, here’s a handy little guide on which colours go together in an outfit and how to rock them without overthinking.

1. Classic Neutrals
Let’s start with the wardrobe heroes: black, white, grey, beige, and navy. These shades are like the best friends who never let you down.

  • Pair white with beige for a soft, summer-chic vibe.
  • Black and camel (or tan) is sleek, understated, and screams sophistication.
  • Want something foolproof? Try all-white with one pop of color — say, red heels or a blue handbag. Classy and effortless!

2. Monochrome Magic
Wearing the same colour family in different tones is a style statement that’s elegant and modern.
Think:

  • Pastel pink top with a rose or dusty pink bottom
  • Shades of blue layered in a shirt, jeans, and bag
  • An all-olive look with hints of sage and khaki

Monochrome dressing is not only easy on the eyes but makes you look instantly put together.

3. Complementary Colours
These are the shades that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel — think of them as colour besties that balance each other out.

  • Blue and orange (yes, it works!)
  • Green and pink (especially in pastel tones)
  • Purple and yellow (think lavender with a mustard sling bag)

Just balance one bold colour with a softer tone from its pair and you’re golden.
