So, welcome to Chapter 27 of the What to Wear series, where I bring back the shrug (dramatic entrance, please). Whether you’re covering up, layering up, or just trying to add a little oomph to a simple look—here’s how I wear my shrugs and make them feel intentional, not accidental.
1. With Spaghetti Tops or Camisoles
This one’s a classic. You know those strappy tops we love but hesitate to wear solo? A light shrug is their BFF. It keeps things modest, adds flair, and saves you from unexpected AC chills at restaurants.

2. Over Dresses
Shrugs work brilliantly over dresses—bodycon, maxi, A-line, take your pick. A cropped shrug can help define your waistline, while a longline shrug adds movement and drama (the good kind). I especially love pairing printed shrugs with solid dresses.

3. With Jumpsuits
Sometimes a jumpsuit just feels a bit too much on its own. That’s where a shrug swoops in to save the day. Add a breezy shrug over a sleeveless or tube jumpsuit for a look that’s balanced and effortless.

4. With Tank Tops and High-Waisted Bottoms
Tucked tank + high-waisted jeans + shrug = instant outfit. Add a messy bun and earrings, and you’re ready for brunch, errands, or those “let’s meet in 10 minutes” plans.

5. Beachwear or Airport Looks
Shrugs are perfect for layering over your swimsuit at the beach or over a comfy tank and joggers at the airport. Lightweight, breathable, and zero drama when you have to take them off at security (you know the drill).

So if you’ve been treating your shrugs like backup dancers in your closet, it’s time to give them their solo performance. They’re that little extra that says, “Yes, I thought this through,” even when you didn’t (been there).
