What to Wear with Belts (to Elevate Any Outfit)-Chapter 23

Because belts aren’t just to keep your jeans up…

Welcome to Chapter 23 of the What to Wear series (who knew we’d get this far without running out of things to pair?). This one’s all about belts—those little magic strips of fabric, leather, or elastic that somehow pull it all together (pun intended, obviously).

We all have at least a couple lying somewhere—maybe in a drawer or casually looped around a hanger, just waiting for their moment of glory. And let me tell you, when styled right, a belt can completely transform your outfit.

Over time, I’ve discovered that belts do more than just cinch the waist—they add structure, shape, sass (and a little drama, if needed). So, if you’ve been ignoring your belts or only using them to keep your jeans from sliding down (relatable, though), here are some fun ways to wear them to actually elevate your look.

1. With Dresses
Flowy maxi? Structured midi? Boxy shirt dress that’s giving nightie vibes? Belt it! Adding a belt over a dress can give your silhouette some definition and balance. Broad belts with maxis and slim, delicate ones with shirt dresses; define that waistline.

2. Over Blazers
This combo is one of my absolute favourites. Take any oversized blazer (the kind that might belong to your dad, or your shopping haul), cinch it with a wide or textured belt, and boom—chic alert! It’s polished, fashion-forward, and honestly, is the ultimate power move.

3. With Ethnic Wear
Belts over sarees, lehengas? YES. Add a sleek metallic belt over a saree pallu or a matching embroidered one over your lehenga dupatta, and suddenly your look is Pinterest-worthy. It also keeps things in place—quite literally.

4. With High-Waisted Bottoms
Tuck a shirt or blouse into your high-waisted pants, shorts, or skirts, and finish it with a belt. Even the most basic top gets an upgrade. Hello Curves!

5. On Jumpsuits
Sometimes jumpsuits can feel a bit one-note. Adding a contrast belt (animal print? neon? studded?) gives your waist definition and breaks the monotony. Plus, it adds just the right amount of flair.

Pro Tip: Don’t Forget the Statement Belt
A statement belt (think bold buckle, interesting texture, or colour pop) can be the star of your outfit. It works magic with monochrome looks—black-on-black with a gold belt? Chef’s kiss!

So, the next time you feel like your outfit is missing something, don’t add another layer—just reach for a belt. It’s the easiest style trick that instantly says, “Yes, I have style, and yes, I planned this.”
