Kerala Vacation Day 1: Exploring Alleppey

Hi there!

I am back from my mini vacation of 3 days. We had a few days off, so my husband and I decided to take a much-needed trip. We agreed on Kerala, since the flight was only an hour, and the views were much needed.

Kerala or “God’s own country” as often called, is like a dream visual. The backwaters are famous here, and you can actually hear the birds chirping from early morning till noon. Our first day was Arookutty, where we were staying, and Alleppey to explore the famous backwaters. Around 40 km, from Kochi, where we had landed on the evening before, Arookutty is lined with coconut palms, offering a scenic view, and nestled by the backwaters. Away from the hustle and bustle, we had booked our stay in Club Mahindra Resort.

The highlight was undoubtedly the boat ride or “Shikara Ride” as it is famously known, through the backwaters of Alleppey. Famous for its houseboats and Shikara rides, Alleppey offers the ultimate experience of Kerala’s backwaters. Perfect place to relax, and let go of everything. We took a two-hour ride on the boat, saw some tourist spots, and just chilled.

Kerala’s vibrant cuisine is one of its biggest attractions, and I did have traditional “Sadhya” which is a vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf. Unfortunately, I forgot to click a picture of it, since I was so busy eating everything. However, here is one of the desserts that enjoyed after dinner at the resort.

The calm that I felt waking up in the morning and going to bed at night is what was much needed. From the early morning walk near the backwaters, the boat ride and traditional food, the scenic views and the friendly people, this vacation Day 1 ended on a peaceful note.

The best way to roam around Alleppey is to hire a cab for 8 hours; the drivers there know where to take you and which places are worth seeing.
